Program Description

At CityU we strive to change our students’ lives for good by providing a high-quality program that is flexible, relevant, timely, purposeful, and manageable.

The program has been approved by the Alberta Minister of Advanced Education upon recommendation of the Campus Alberta Quality Council.

For current teachers and other professionals, who want to transition into leadership roles, this program supports growth and development. Employing a practitioner-scholar model, the Master of Education-Education in Leadership program prepares students for career options in leadership and management.

The Master of Education- Education in Leadership in Education program is cohort-based (Online and Synchronous for Domestic and In-Person for International students), enabling a personal focus to occur through research and internship experiences.

Program Outcomes

Beyond the learning outcomes listed below—but related to them—is a collection of specific skills, approaches, and attitudes that serve as leadership foundations.
Leadership as a Profession—Understand, develop, and apply the leadership skills and ideas needed to promote educational and organizational reform and successfully lead new initiatives.
Ethical and Legal Issues in Leadership—Analyze, develop, and apply professional ethics to include knowledge of legislation and accountability issues in educational and organizational environments.
Research and Inquiry—Understand, analyze, and promote program improvement and accountability based on in-depth research and inquiry.
Data-Informed Decision Making—Find, evaluate, access, and apply research and best practices to inform one’s own practice.
Multicultural and Diversity Awareness—Understand, evaluate, and work effectively with diverse populations, families, colleagues, and organizations.
Assessment Techniques—Select, apply, and interpret a variety of appraisal and assessment techniques for a diverse and inclusive population.

Delivery Modes

The Master of Education-Education in Leadership program is comprised of 18 courses, including working internships and a capstone project. Students will complete their studies in a cohort comprised of learners working together under the leadership of faculty members. The program includes three internships each of one are divided into A and B where students are mentored by both a CityU faculty member and a school, district-based, or organizational leader. Graduates of the Master of Education- Education in Leadership program have found employment as department or curriculum leaders, vice principals, and principals, as well as in other professional leadership and management positions.

CityU accepts applications on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a cohort has reached the maximum number of students, waitlisted applications are considered for future cohorts.

English Proficiency:  
English is the language of instruction at CityU. All applicants are required to demonstrate competence in the English language prior to admission. If English is not your first language or you’ve received your education in a language other than English, you must meet our English Language Requirements.
Basic Requirements: 
While an education background or teaching experience may be beneficial, it is not a mandatory requirement for admission. Applications are reviewed holistically, taking into account academic qualifications, professional experience, and overall suitability for the program. Applicants must hold a four-year Bachelor’s degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher to be considered for admission.

- References – The 2 professional references may be from any combination of academic instructors, professional managers/supervisors, or volunteer supervisors. Personal and client references will not be accepted as one of the three required professional references but may be submitted as supplementary documentation. Download the form.

2. Submit your application

Visit the Apply Now section, and fill in your application form.
Pay an application fee of $75.

3. Receive an acknowledgment email

Once your application form and application fee have been received and processed you will receive an email from our Enrolment Team with instructions on how to submit the supplemental documents. Please allow up to 5 business days for your application form to be processed, and please check your junk folder to ensure you receive the email from your Enrolment Advisor.

4. Submit your official transcripts

You must submit official university or college transcripts for transfer credit. If you wish to receive transfer credits, please submit official university/college/International Baccalaureate (IB)/Advanced Placements (AP) transcripts either electronically or by mail. These would be official notary documents from countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc. and can be accepted in place of original or school-certified documents. The Apostille is prepared by either the Ministry of Education or the Ministry of Justice in these countries.
Please note: Documents issued in a language other than English must also include certified English translations. Documents must be in the original language of the issue and translated into English by a recognized translator, if required.

5. Get ready for your first day

Once you’ve been accepted into a program, you’ll need to start planning your courses. You will be notified of your acceptance through your CityU email and your myCityU account.

5. Receive a letter of acceptance and apply for a study permit

After paying your tuition deposit, you will receive a letter of acceptance in your CityU inbox. This may be used to apply for, or renew, a study permit. Depending on your citizenship, you may also need to apply for an entry visa.

6. Get ready for your first day

Refund Policy

At CityU, we understand that circumstances can change. The guidelines below explain the conditions under which tuition and fees may be refunded for students who withdraw from courses.

Eligibility for Refunds

Tuition is refundable only when a student officially withdraws in accordance with the University’s Tuition Refund Schedule.
Students who are withdrawn due to disciplinary reasons or a breach of conduct are not eligible for a refund of tuition or fees.
Students who attend classes without having paid may request to be withdrawn; their accounts will be credited according to the standard refund schedule.
Students who withdraw at the end of the term are not eligible for a refund or credit. If a course must be repeated, full tuition will apply.

Official Withdrawal Process

To officially withdraw from a course:

Students must contact their Academic Advisor or the Office of the Registrar.
The date of contact will determine the applicable refund amount.
Students receiving financial aid must notify the CityU in Canada Financial Aid Office to ensure compliance with applicable funding rules.
The Financial Aid Office will notify relevant provincial financial aid authorities.
Students may be required to repay the awards received, depending on the nature and timing of the withdrawal.

Appeals for Extenuating Circumstances

If a withdrawal occurs outside the standard refund schedule due to a personal hardship (e.g., medical, family emergency), a student may submit a refund appeal.

Appeals must be submitted in writing and include supporting documentation.
All appeals will be reviewed by the CityU Withdrawal Committee.
The Committee will notify the students of the decision once a review is complete.

Payment Obligations and Non-Refundable Deposits

Tuition deposits and tuition fees are non-refundable after the published refund deadline.
Students who fail to pay in full will be responsible for the unpaid balance on their student account for the quarter.
Unpaid accounts may be referred to collections in accordance with University policy.

Refund Disbursement

Students should clearly state how they would like any eligible refund to be processed (e.g., credit card, check, applied to a future term).
Credit card refunds will be returned to the original card.
Refund balances of less than $1.00 will be written off at the end of the fiscal year (June 30), unless required otherwise by financial aid or veteran benefit regulations.

For International Students

The tuition deposit is non-refundable once the Letter of Acceptance has been issued, except in cases of IRCC study permit refusal (with submission of the refusal letter).
If a refund request is made before the LOA is issued, a $500 handling fee applies (application fee remains non-refundable).
In the case of a visa refusal, refunds are typically processed within 15 business days and returned to the original payer.

Courses

Employing a practitioner-scholar model, the M.Ed. Leadership in Education Program trains teachers for career options in educational leadership, including (but not confined to) administration. The program emphasizes application of theory to practice, ethical awareness, educational leadership perspectives, human resource and organizational systems issues, management of change, conflict resolution, assessment in education, research and data-informed decision-making, development of communication and counselling skills, appreciation of diversity, self-awareness, and the importance of being a reflective practitioner. We introduce students to a broad range of educational and leadership issues through a breadth of course work, delivered by practitioner faculty. Supported internships allow students to focus on skills and dispositions that benefit their professional responsibilities as well as challenge their growth in leadership. Educators complete a capstone project or thesis and create a professional portfolio based on coursework and internship experience. A made-in-Canada curriculum and the use of local teaching faculty allow the program to respond to district, regional, and provincial contexts.
