Stephen Guy is an academic writing specialist who has been working with post-secondary students in Canada for over 15 years. He has been supporting CityU students at the CAWC since 2025.

Writing instruction, generative AI and writing assessment, adult education, EAL, American literature, Spanish literature in translation, prose style, literary nonfiction, satire, popular music, internet communities.
Teaching
I think that teaching is an act of leadership. The goal of my teaching is to help students move from dependence on the clear and well-organized direction of the instructor to self-directed inquiry. I am realistic that each class is made up of varying types of learners and that certain students will depend more heavily on structure and instruction than others, but it is my aim in each class to help students discover the techniques that will lead them most effectively to an idiosyncratic and personally fulfilling encounter with the subject material. At the end of a class students will ideally have the tools to become and the desire to consider themselves autodidacts.
