International Student Application Checklist

This checklist is designed to help you successfully complete your application by confirming all mandatory requirements and ensuring that nothing important is missed.

As an international incoming undergraduate or graduate student, this checklist provides a clear view of the entire application process, allowing you to see the big picture and track what needs to be completed at each stage. It serves as a practical verification tool to help you stay organized, meet important deadlines, and move through the application process with confidence.

In addition to the application requirements, this page also connects you to the Pre‑Arrival Guides, which support you after you receive an offer of admission. These guides provide essential information to help you prepare for your arrival, including immigration steps, travel planning, housing, medical insurance, and what to expect when studying and living in Canada.

We encourage you to review both the Application Checklist and the Pre‑Arrival Guides early, and to refer to them regularly as you progress from application through arrival and enrollment.
Checklists and Pre arrival Guides

After You Are Admitted: Next Steps (International Students) 

Once you receive an offer of admission, complete the steps below as soon as possible. Some steps depend on others, and immigration processing times can vary. 

Step 1: Accept Your Offer

• Review your offer of admission and any conditions 
• Accept your offer by the deadline 
• Pay the required deposit (if applicable) 

Step 2: Receive Your Admission Documents

After you accept your offer:

• Receive your Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from the university 
• Receive your Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) (if required) 

Both documents are required for most study permit applications. 

Step 3: Receive Your Admission Documents

Using your LOA and PAL, apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):

• Apply for your Study Permit 
• Apply for a Work Permit (if applicable) 
• Submit required documents (passport, financial proof, insurance, etc.) 

Apply early — IRCC processing times vary. 

Step 4: Prepare for Arrival

While waiting for your permit decision:

• Review the PreArrival Guides 
• Arrange housing and travel 
• Plan for medical insurance 
• Prepare for living and studying in Canada 

Step 5: Get Ready to Start

After your study permit is approved:

• Finalize travel plans
• Complete registration and orientation steps 
• Bring all required documents when travelling to Canada 

Important Reminders 

• Immigration requirements may change. Always check official IRCC information. 
• The university cannot provide immigration advice but can guide you through required steps. 
• Delays at any stage may affect your program start date.

Through a wide range of academic support services, students can access the tools and guidance they need to strengthen their learning and reach their goals.

What is an Advisor?   

You might wonder what is the difference between the Student Advisor and the Counsellors in Counselling Services? 

An Advisor is a staff member who guides and supports students in navigating their academic journey. It includes but is not limited to providing information about the many support services and resources available to students. Advisors help students achieve their academic goals by advising them about their course selection and the associated academic requirements. They also explain and clarify institutional policies, describe the overarching expectations of students, and facilitate connections with other campus or community supports, resources or services. 

Here are some of the ways Advisors can assist:  

• Transition to life in Canada  
• Assistance with support letters for Visa, Study Permit, or Work permit applications and extensions. 
• Clarification about part-time and full-time studies 
• Health insurance coverage information  
• Scheduled and Unscheduled breaks 
• Tutorials services  
• And more…. 

Advisors are available for virtual, over the phone, and in-person advising during regular business hours.

Costs are estimates and may differ depending on where and how you live.

To support your transition into graduate studies, we are proud to offer the International Student Welcome Grant—a financial award designed to ease the initial financial burden and celebrate your potential as a future leader in education.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

All international students who receive an Offer of Admission to CityU in Canada are automatically considered for the grant. No separate application is required.

All international students who receive an Offer of Admission to the Master of Education – Education in Leadership program at CityU in Canada are automatically considered for the International Student Welcome Grant. No separate application is required.

Budgeting

Managing your money wisely is key to a successful study experience. This section provides guidance to help international students create and maintain a budget, track expenses, and prepare for both expected and unexpected costs while living in Canada.

This section provides an estimated overview of the standard cost of living for an international student living in Canada with a partner. Amounts are shown in Canadian dollars (CAD) and are intended as general guidance only. Actual expenses may vary depending on factors such as city of residence, housing type, lifestyle choices, and personal spending habits.

All international students are required to present proof that they have medical insurance in effect at the time of enrollment. If you have insurance, please submit this form.

International students must present proof of active medical insurance before registering for classes. International students are eligible for provincially subsidized public health insurance in Canada.

Empower Me is a confidential mental health and wellness service available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Empower Me is available to students temporarily located outside of Canada for a maximum of 90 days through the Dialogue mobile app or web platform.

Medical Insurance in Alberta

Understanding Mandatory Insurance for International Students in Alberta 

Welcome to Alberta! As an international student at CityU, it’s essential to understand the mandatory types of insurance required during your studies. Ensuring you have the right coverage will protect your health and well-being while meeting provincial and institutional requirements. 

All international students must provide proof of active medical insurance upon their arrival for their first quarter of enrollment. If you have insurance, please submit this form. 

In addition to providing proof of medical coverage for their first quarter, international students must present evidence of active medical insurance before further registering for classes. Those who have relocated to Alberta are eligible for provincially subsidized public health insurance after three months but must apply immediately upon arrival in Canada. 

1. Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) 

The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) is a provincial health insurance program that covers medically necessary services such as doctor visits, hospital stays, and diagnostic tests. 

International students from outside Canada may be eligible for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) coverage.  Learn more. 

Who Needs AHCIP? 

• If you are staying in Alberta for more than 12 months, you are required to enroll in AHCIP. 
• Enrollment is free for eligible residents. 

How to Apply  

• Visit an AHCIP registry office with your study permit and proof of residence. 
• Complete the AHCIP application form (Forms for AHCIP)  
• Request a Confirmation of Enrollment Letter for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) Application from your Academic Advisor 

2. Alumo Extended Health and Dental Insurance  

CityU partners with Alumo to provide extended health and dental coverage for all international students. This plan supplements AHCIP by covering additional medical expenses not included in the provincial plan. 

Coverage Includes: 

• Prescription medications. 
• Vision care (e.g., glasses or contact lenses). 
• Dental treatments. 
• Physiotherapy, chiropractic care, and more. 

Enrolling in the Plan 

• International students are automatically enrolled in the Alumo plan upon registration. 
• The cost of the plan is included in your student medical insurance fees. 

Opt-Out Option: 

• If you have comparable private insurance, you may opt out of the extended plan by submitting proof of coverage during the designated opt-out period.

We offer counselling and support services to help you adjust. We know that moving to a new country can be challenging, and we’re here to provide the extra help you might need.

Accommodation and Transportation

City University does not provide on-campus housing, but students can access a variety of external housing resourcesto find safe, affordable, and convenient accommodations. These resources include off-campus rental listings, shared apartments, and local housing services.

Students are encouraged to research options carefully, connect with local communities, and consider accessibility or special accommodation needs when selecting housing. While CityU does not manage housing directly, our Student Services team can provide guidance and tips to help you navigate your options.

  Airbnb has many short and long term options for students.  Visit their site to investigate your options.
• HOSTELS: 
  If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to hotels, hostels would be a good compromise if you don’t mind sharing a room with other people.  Visit this website for more information.
• HOMESTAY: 
  Another alternative is homestays.  You live with a family of your choice and meals are often provided.  This method of living offers the chance to live like a local and experience what life is really like in that place. British Columbia

• STUDENT RESIDENCES:
  If you are looking for a student-orientated housing option, Global Education City (GEC) is a student residence located in Vancouver. They offer student hotels as well as serviced apartments. Global Education City (GEC) is a student residence located in Vancouver. Their mandate is to “offer access to, and provide, safe, secure and comfortable accommodations to foreign and domestic students, thereby helping to give them a positive, meaningful experience while they live and study in Vancouver, BC, Canada.”  Residence halls are open to students of any institution and have a variety of choices or room types.  Students are able to sign a contract for as little as 8 weeks for their whole degree.  Visit their website for more information.
• HOTELS:
  If you are looking for a place to live until you settle down in a long-term apartment, there are plenty of hotels near CityU. Most hotels offer a shuttle from the airport or taxi service. The YWCA Hotel Vancouver is safe and affordable option in Downtown Vancouver

nternational students in Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton have access to a range of convenient and affordable transportation options. All three cities offer reliable public transit systems, including buses and rail services, with discounted student passes available. Vancouver’s TransLink includes buses, SkyTrain, and SeaBus, while Calgary and Edmonton operate CTrain and LRT systems alongside extensive bus networks. Students may also choose to walk, cycle, or use ride-sharing services. Transportation costs and availability may vary by city and location, so students are encouraged to plan based on their daily travel needs and budget.
