Our accelerated online prerequisite courses are designed specifically for prospective MC students who need to meet admission requirements before beginning their graduate studies. Whether you are missing one prerequisite or several, you can complete only the courses you need while strengthening your academic foundation and preparing for success in graduate-level study.

Do I Need Prerequisites?
Not all applicants are required to complete prerequisite courses. As part of the admissions process, CityU reviews your previous academic coursework to determine whether any prerequisite requirements have already been met.
If additional coursework is needed, our Admissions Team will identify the specific prerequisite course(s) required before you begin the Master of Counselling program.

Admission
Admission Pathway
Prerequisite courses are intended for prospective Master of Counselling applicants who need to complete specific admission requirements before beginning the program.
Before registering, prospective students are encouraged to submit their application and transcripts for review. Admissions will assess previous coursework and determine whether any prerequisite courses are required.
Admission Process
Step 1: Submit your application and transcripts for review.
Step 2: Receive a prerequisite assessment from Admissions (Enrollment Advisor).
Step 3: Register for any required prerequisite courses (Academic Advisor).
Step 4: Successfully complete all prerequisite requirements.
Step 5: Begin the Master of Counselling program once admission requirements have been met.
Academic Requirements
- Prerequisite courses must be completed with a final grade of C or higher.
- Applicants with a cumulative GPA below 2.75 must achieve a final grade of B or higher in each prerequisite course.
- All prerequisite requirements must be completed before starting the Master of Counselling program.
Admission Considerations
- Completing prerequisite courses at CityU does not guarantee admission to the Master of Counselling program.
- Taking prerequisites at CityU does not provide an advantage in the admissions process.
- Equivalent coursework completed at recognized post-secondary institutions may satisfy prerequisite requirements, subject to Admissions review.

CityU offers three accelerated online prerequisite courses designed to help prospective Master of Counselling (MC) students meet admission requirements and prepare for graduate-level study. Students may complete one, two, or all three courses, depending on their individual prerequisite assessment.

PSY 205 – Lifespan Developmental Psychology
This course provides an introduction to developmental psychology, exploring the psychological growth and changes that occur throughout the human lifespan. Key theories and research on cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development will be examined, with an emphasis on understanding how these developmental processes interact and influence each other. This course helps satisfy the Human Development prerequisite requirement for admission to the Master of Counselling program.
PSY 335: Psychology of Personality
This course explores major theories of personality development and individual differences. Students examine the biological, psychological, social, and cultural influences that shape personality and human behavior. This course helps satisfy the Personality prerequisite requirement for admission to the Master of Counselling program.
PSY 330: Psychology of Learning and Cognition
This course examines how people learn, think, remember, solve problems, and process information. Topics include cognitive development, learning theories, memory, attention, reasoning, and decision-making. This course helps satisfy the Learning and Cognition prerequisite requirement for admission to the Master of Counselling program.

Course Format
All prerequisite courses are delivered online in an intensive format and include both live and independent learning components (Approximately 15 hours of coursework per week).
Live Learning
- Three live Zoom classes held on Saturdays
- 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time
- Attendance at all Zoom sessions is required
- Cameras must remain on during class participation
Independent Learning
- Weekly readings and coursework
- Two research papers
- One group presentation
- Individual and collaborative learning activities
- Approximately 15 hours of coursework per week
There are no tests or final exams.

Tuition
To help you plan for your studies, please review the tuition amount, payment options, and important payment information for prerequisite courses below.
The tuition fee for each prerequisite course is $726 CAD.
Prerequisite courses are billed on a per-course basis. Tuition becomes payable once your registration has been confirmed.
After receiving confirmation from your Academic Advisor, please submit your payment promptly to keep your account in good standing and avoid financial holds that may affect future registration or access to student services.

- Make a secure payment through your CityU student account using the online payment option in the Student Portal.
Credit Card
- Credit card payments are accepted through the student payment system.
- Credit card processing fees may apply.
Cheque
- Make cheques payable to City University of Seattle.
- Include your:
- Full name
- CityU Student ID number
This information helps ensure your payment is applied to the correct account.
Payment Deadlines and Financial Holds
Students are responsible for ensuring tuition is paid by the applicable deadline. Unpaid balances may result in a financial hold on your account, which can affect access to student services and prevent future course or program registration until the balance has been resolved.

Can I receive a refund if I withdraw?
Yes, you may be eligible for a refund, depending on when your withdrawal request is received.
- Before the course starts: Email BCAdmissions@CityU.edu
- After the course starts: Contact your Academic Advisor
Important: Refund eligibility is based on the date your withdrawal request is received, not the date you stop attending classes. Refund deadlines apply.
What is the tuition refund policy if I withdraw from a course?
If you withdraw from a course within the published refund eligibility period, you may be eligible for a partial tuition refund. Withdrawals submitted after the refund eligibility period are not eligible for a tuition refund.
- Withdrawal before the course start date: 100% tuition refund
- Withdrawal submitted within the published refund eligibility period: Partial tuition refund may apply.
Withdrawal submitted after the refund eligibility period: No tuition refund will be issued.
How do I request a withdrawal from a course?
If you withdraw from a course within the published refund eligibility period, you may be eligible for a partial tuition refund. WithStudents who wish to withdraw must submit a formal withdrawal request in accordance with the University’s withdrawal procedures. The effective withdrawal date is the date the request is received by email.
Where can I find the refund eligibility period for my course?
Refund eligibility periods and withdrawal deadlines are published for each course or program. Students are encouraged to review these dates carefully before submitting a withdrawal request.
Can I withdraw from a course after it has started?
Yes. Students may withdraw from a course without academic penalty up to the 80% completion point of the course. After this point, withdrawals are no longer permitted. Once a final grade has been posted, a withdrawal cannot be processed.
Will I recieve a tuition refund if I withdraw?
Refund eligibility is determined by the applicable refund deadline, which may occur earlier than the withdrawal deadline. If you withdraw after the refund deadline, you may remain financially responsible for some or all tuition charges.
What is the difference between the withdrawal deadline and the refund deadline?
The withdrawal deadline is the last date you can leave a course without academic penalty. The refund deadline is the last date you may be eligible for a tuition refund. These dates are not always the same, so students should review both carefully before submitting a withdrawal request.
Where can I find my course withdrawal and refund deadlines?
Course-specific withdrawal and refund deadlines are published in the applicable course or program information. Students are encouraged to review these dates before making any changes to their registration.

Can Courses Completed at Another Institution Be Used to Meet Prerequisite Requirements?
Possibly. Previously completed coursework may be accepted if it meets the required academic and content criteria. As course titles alone do not always accurately reflect the material covered, you may be asked to provide course descriptions, syllabi, or other supporting documentation for review. Official transcripts and supporting documents will be evaluated as part of the admissions review process.
What Happens After I Complete My Prerequisite Courses?
